1994 1.6 disabling steering lock - 56abbotts
Hello.

does anybody know how to disable the steering lock on a '94 L plate 316?
My lodgers ignition barrel has recently given out. He called the AA out and they took the steering column panel off and showed him how to start the car. He has to remove the steering lock, start the ignition and then put the key back in the ignition whilst driving but on occasions the steering lock comes back on.
Tomorrow (26th) he has to do a 200 mile trip for a 2 day training course, and then the return trip a couple of days later and doesn't want to risk the lock coming on during the trip.
He's already booked and paid for the trip and also booked and paid for the hotel room so he stands to lose a chunk of money if he can't make it. Being 19 hiring a car until he can get the lock sorted is going to be very difficult

thanks in advance.

To remove or replace the steering lock on this model is a mission and a half. The lock housing forms part of the top steering column bearing and requires removal of airbag(if fitted)steering wheel and column switches. The security shear bolts will then have to be drilled out .This is not an easy diy job.hth

Would it be possible to get a bit more info about doing it?
Roughly how long would that take?
And is it possible to just break the lock by brute force of the steering wheel?
