VW Jetta 2.5 litre 5 pot in U.S.A - mattbod
A friend of mine in California has just bought one of these with a 2.5 litre inline five 170 bhp. Says the engineis absolutely fantastic. I have checked it out on Youtube and it does indeed sound good, just like an old ur quattro, why don't we get this engine?

We did in the last model. It is a VR6 with a cylinder chopped off.

Answer as to why not now is fuel consumption and emissions mean nobody would buy it.

I thought it is a V5 but no it's not it is an inline 5. I think it is a brand new engine based on the 2.0 FSI 4. Should be cleaner than the V6 in the R32 but I agree on the emissions. Looks like a lovely car and v good value for money out there too.

According to my Audi dealer it's coming soon - in an Audi TTRS - with a turbo or two - 350ish bhp.

We get the 1.4 TSI 160 instead, which IMO is a much better engine.

It is indeed being twin-turbo'd as the Audi TT RS.

V6 too thirsty, 4cyl deemed unworthy of 350bhp - inline 5 just waiting to be used.

The older VW 5 pot which initially came as 150PS and later 170PS was actually a V5. The Audi 5 pot is a different engine.

The straight 5 cylinder engine from the US version of the Jetta is certainly the same as the one in the Audi TTRS. Audi launched the TTRS in Germany last spring though apparently only now are the cars actually being supplied to customers. Something to do with "logistic problems" with some of the specialised components.

I stand corrected. I thought the US version would have had the same V5 as the European version.
