Rear seat removal to fit a dog transport box. - Martin Devon
Does anybody have any experience or first hand knowledge whether it is possible to remove the rear seats from a Suzuki Jimny and fit a dog box for transporting 2 Labradors.

Thanks guys............MD

Yes it is possible if you have a socket set, they just bolt into the floor.

Thank Stu, Is the floor flat do you know?

I'm sure they do bolt into the floor but it is not obvious on the facelifted (2006 on) version how you get at the bolts although I didn't look underneath. Not having got the seats out I guess the floor is flat from older SJ413s I have seen with seats removed. I was toying with fitting a dog cage at the time but found that you probably need a custom-made one because of the dimensions. The cheaper alternative is to leave the seats in place and get a custom-made dog-proof cover that takes account of the 'step' that is left when the seats are folded down. I found examples of both cage and cover custom-made for the Jimny on the internet. Suzuki France also have a rubber cover in their parts catalogue but Suzuki GB doesn't list the full boot cover, only a small one for behind the seats. In the end, it became clear that the amount of time the dog(s) spent in the car couldn't justify going beyond a guard and a blanket.

I'll have a look on the net. It's just that the Jimny is such a good vehicle reliability wise and so good off road I want one, but not so practical for two Labrador's.

You could get a Vitara.

You're right, but as I understand it the Vitara is made/assembled in Spain and a bit wobbly in the reliability stakes especially at the money I am thinking of spending (3k) ish. The Jimny has been tightened up in Japan if I am correct.

If you are talking of a new Jimny then I think production has ceased in Japan although it was listed last week by one of the new car exporters there. In any case only the automatic Jimny was coming from Japan to the UK, the rest coming from Santana in Spain who recently announced they will make it for another two years despite the stop in Japan. I don't know what the £ is like against the yen currently but the dollar is dreadful and importing from Japan privately not sensible unless you want a specialist vehicle of some kind.
The cage I mentioned (I have a photo of one with a couple of springers but no contact on my PC) was from a specialist up in Cumbria, I think. The cover is a Quiltie from a company called overthetop and in 2006 cost £146 made for the folded seats in the Jimny.
We have been very pleased with our automatic Jimny and its basic off-road potential. The only drawback with the automatic is the low range gearing is not so effective for hill descents as a manual. On the plus side it does not have potentially expensive electronic gizmos.

Thanks for that info Sir. Most useful I hope. Was hoping for an Auto so that SWMBO can have a go. We share the driving. I drive to the Pub and she dri.....................get it?

Will keep looking, but only got about 3k to spend.

Are you saying that production is ceasing of this great little vehicle and if so is there a replacement on the way?

Yes to the first question and no to the second. Through work we can buy official and private cars direct from the factory and I noticed around six months ago that the Jimny in manual and auto was no longer delivered from Japan but from Europe in manual only. A quick trawl around the net found the motor trade sites reporting a deal by Santana to continue building the Jimny for Europe for two years following a Suzuki decision to halt production. The presumption is that Santana will then go for a licence to build their own version as they have done with the Vitara. However, I believe Iveco now has an involvement in Santana so that could all be up in the air. Suzuki have made no announcements about a Jimny replacement and instead emphasised they will concentrate on their small cars. As an aside, virtually all the small Japanese cars you get in Europe have 4WD versions in Japan, i.e. a Nissan Note with the back two wheels driven by an electric motor!

My Dad has a (08 Plate/June 2008) top model (with all the toys) and you "do not" unbolt the front back seat on this model - they click out. They are on plastic clips. They take a good hard sharp pull and it clicks out. Pull left and right of the seat that is were the clips are. There is no middle clip. I mean really grab hold than pull very fast. Click they come out. The trick is to pull hard fast. If you apply constant slow pressure no chance they seem designed to hold in there when people are sitting down.

Don't worry you won't break anything the seat is pliable and the clips are made of a sort of bendy plastic - it is unlikely to crack.

Thought I would leave this message as we were nervous to pull and started trying to get the bracket off the floor with a socket set. This is frankly impossible don't bother trying. When they built it they put them in then pushed the seat down sharp to click it in. There is no access to these bolts.

It is actually a great system this if you get good at it, it is quick and makes plenty room in the back as the front back seat is not on a hinge. It stores perfect in the space between the fold down and the front seats. You also gain space under the back folded down seats not much but some.

My dad also built a small hollow timber storage box which we covered with carpet - just like boxing in a van. So the back boot rises to the folded seat level (to remove the step). So my Dad now has a perfect huge back space for his Dog. Nice bit of room for the size of the car.

We put a cage in there and have a big male Siberian Husky pretty comfy in there. No problems at all with him. We also made a cover for the bumper to fold out as he comes in and out.

With a little thought the Jimny is great for a couple and a Dog. Or an active young person who wants a big space at the back and cheap 4x4. For a family it is unsuitable but for the the use my Dad has which it to take his dog off road for walks - it works great and is a cheap second car.

Great little car plenty fun to drive. I mean it really is not a Land Rover, BMW or Jeep 4x4 but for the money what a little fun off roader it is. We have had it up farms it eats it. It is like a toy land rover but great fun and the fuel is awesome for a 4x4. If you want a cheap mini 4x4 can't beat this one. The cost compared to a Land Rover is funny. If you only off road a little buy it as a second car and save the running cost of taking a hulking great 4x4 around on a day to day basis. Just keep your road car and have this for the weekend.

I commend the Vitara to you for a couple of big dogs. I have a LWB Turbo diesel auto. No rust, Brill engine, economical, 14yrs old and didn't spend a penny on spares in last year. Can get 9 ft lengths of timber in it and tows my 17ft caravan with ease.
Cheap, comfortable and versatile.

I was advised to steer clear of the Vitara due to build quality, but from what you say maybe I'll have a look. Cheers.
