Corrado consumes power steering pumps - Ross D
Hi all.

I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice.

I own a 1.8 16v Corrado and about 6 months ago my power steering pump started giving up the ghost. At full lock it would squeak, then a month later at slow speed it getting a jerking sensation through the steering wheel accompanied with a squeak.

I got local independent VW specialist to replace the pump. they replaced it with a second hand one which (apparently) came off of a low mileage mark 4 polo. Everythings been fine for a while but I have started to experience the squeaking/screeching again. was the pump from the polo inappropriate. Or is there another reason why the pump has given out. (assuming it was from a low mileage car)

at a service a year or so ago, I was told my power steering pipes were corroded could this be a reason for the pump failing (contaminated power steering fluid?) The car has passed 2 MOT's since the corrosion was pointed out to me so it's obviuosly not sufficient reason to fail the car.

Any suggestion, comments, feedback wold be appreciated.

Cheers
Ross

What's happened this month;all the problems are VW or Peugeot.

Simple!

The belt is slack causing the highly stressed pump (on full lock) to cause the drivebelt to slip (screech) and therefore cause the PAS pump to momentarily stop turning. This will give the jerky feel you can feel back through the steering wheel.

Tighten the belt (make it fairly tight) and all should be well.

Don't use the same garage - they should have spotted this.

I've never known a VW PAS pump fail....

Ross, I was always told you should never go to full lock on a car with PAS, because you'll overstrain the box and the drive belt. Perhaps if you changed your steering technique you'd find the problem went away of its own accord -- assuming you haven't already donalded the replacement box.

It's true that avoiding using full lock is often recommended, with good reason, althought using full lock isn't a problem in itself if you're careful. The system responds to torque on the steering column, so it's really holding the wheel hard over at full lock which causes the system to run at high pressure, lifting the relief valve, and causing the problems you describe. If you hit full lock and then ease back on the wheel when manoevering it eases the system's life no end.
