semi-synth oil - Screwloose

5W-30 semi-synth to Ford's 913 spec is the recommended oil.

I put semi-synth 10W40 in my old Escort.

If it's pre-96,then Ford 10w/30 or 20w/50.

Yes; it would also be useful if we could be let into the secret of which year and exact engine.

Yes! Despite 2 sticky's warning of deletion if this info isn't included, and a further prompt under the subject header itself asking for this information; it's amazing the amount of people who STILL don't bother to include it.

An Escort could be more than forty years old(there was an 100E Escort).

sorry its a 1.4 1991

Depends on the mileage but 5/30 is very light for this engine imo.

Would be putting 15/40 if lowish mileage or 15/50 if high mileage (over 80k) if it was in my care.

Perhaps zookeeper will also let us into the secret of what grade the Halfords oil is that he has acquired.
semi-synth oil - zookeeper
sorry guys.... halfords 15/40 semi synth to go in a ford escort 1.4 , 1991 , 100k , yay or nay?
semi-synth oil - Screwloose

Keep it for the summer. That's going to make the starter on a CVH really struggle on a freezing morning.

Or use it at one litre per oil change of 5W-30.

In view of the age of the car I would say that the oil you have acquired will suit it very well. I'd go ahead and use it.
When starting the car dip the clutch before operating the starter, that way the starter (and battery) won't have to work so hard.
I'd do a filter change at the same time of course. Use a quality filter.

CVH should be on 10w/30.

I should add that anything thicker is likely to cause the tappets to pump-up.
semi-synth oil - zookeeper
if the tappets "pump up" will that mean the valves wont close fully?
semi-synth oil - jc2
Yes but usually only occurs at highish revs.

I still think you would have nothing to worry about if you used it as it is. I would if it was my car. I have been servicing my own cars, as well as those of friends and relatives for 35 years now and never had a problem. My Astra had hydraulic tappets and I used slightly higher viscosity oils in that from time to time and it ran fine. Even used 20W/50 one summer. It was high mileage and I changed the oil and filter as per the recommended schedule.

However, if you ARE worried about it why not follow Screwloose's suggestion.

Or, buy the perfect oil and send the Halfords stuff to me and I'll use it in my Corsa.

what the heck.. il change the oil tomorrow, im a bit worried about the emmisions for the MOT on wednesday i thought a change of oil may help as it is a bit smelly whilst sat at the lights, ive been topping up with cheapo 20/50 just recently and i suppose that hasnt helped ...thanks all for the advise .... z

if its a bit stnky at the traffic lights, might need new valve stem seals

theyre pretty easy to change on a cvh...you can get a little valve spring compresor to do it all in situ

had to change mine q often when i ran a escort

Good luck with the MOT. Don't forget to check the air filter too, as that might help.

if it fails miserably , i'l weight it in , but if it gets through ( wonder if MOTman will remember from last year that he told me to renew my numberplate) i may have a look at doing the valve seals, cant see a lot wrong with it to be honest, boots and gaiters are all in good nick , new brake pads , steering and suspension are behaving ok .... fingers crossed tho
semi-synth oil - yorkiebar
The recommended oil for this from new (recommended by ford that is) was 15/40.

Its not too thick, it wont cause the lifters any problem and nor will it strain the starter. Considering the mileage its the ideal oil for it.
semi-synth oil - zookeeper
hi room, MOT failed... cracked number plate, seat belt anchorage corrosion , scored brake disc, and excessive play in n/s rear wheel bearing ... i think 90 quid should get me back on the road ...... number plate £8.00
bearing £20.00
brake discs £ 10.00
welding £ 50.00
but it sailed though everything else including emissions
semi-synth oil - Dynamic Dave
Aren't you going to change the pads as well as the discs?
semi-synth oil - zookeeper
pads are ok i did them 3k ago,
semi-synth oil - Dynamic Dave
The pads will have worn to the contours and ridges of the old discs. As pads are vitually as hard as the discs these days, then the new discs will soon show signs of those same contours and ridges that the old discs had on them.

As the discs are only a tenner, then the pads can't be very expensive. Always best to fit new pads when fitting new discs.
