Plan to make an insurance claim to have my car repaired. If i am unsatisfied with the repair work what shall i do?

do i refuse to collect the car and ring the insurance company?

am i supposed to collect the car and tell them i will be complaining?

Would like to know beforehand what my rights are before i take it to the garage.

remember its your choice what garage repairs it...so id do some homework first before it goes anywhere, have a look round..see how they treat the cars, do they all have seat covers on? any parts leaning against cars etc

once the car is ready to collect they will ask you to inspect it and sign a satisfaction note ...i suggest you look at it daylight and under the workshop lights, make sure its clean and dry when you inspect it

if its not good enough you would refuse to accept it and not sign thier satisfaction note...hopefully they would rectify it at that stage , if not you would need to complain to the insurance company and they would send their man out to check the work

My first ever accident requiring repair and I let my insurance company take my car to their approved repairer, some centre which doesn't specialise in a particular make. The repair was awful and despite giving the approved repairer another chance it still wasn't right. The insurance company sent out an inspector who agreed the issues and asked where I wanted to take my car, to which I said the local franchise dealer who rectified the issues to bring the car back to perfect condition.

The insurance company said they would deduct the rectification work bill from the approved repairer invoice so no skin off the insurers nose.

I once got my Scenic repaired by Direct Line's approved repairer (metallic silver). A couple of months later I noticed that the repair was different shades. Phoned the repairer direct and they uplifted car, fixed it to a great standard, and dropped it back off.

DiL car needed fixing after being rear ended.

Repair was at DLs preferred repairer - paint was the wrong colour - purply blue instead of true metallic blue.

Sent man out to take photos - one look and he said no photos the eveidence speaks for itself - car taken away and rerturned 3 days later.

I had a 2 week old car repaired at the preferred repairer and at that time ithe Ins Co guaranteed the repair for the time you had the car - 6 yrs later it bubbled on the rear door - car was fixed by repairer even although they "only guarantee work for 3 yrs). Now the same insurer only covers work for 3 years - not good enough in my view.

If you go elsewhere for a repair (other than the Ins Co Preferered Repairer) and it is poor do not expect the Ins Co to have much sympathy.

You seem to be crossing your bridges before you come to them wazza.

One would hope that by recommendation, reputation or manufacturer connection the garage you have chosen inspires some sort of confidence. If not, try to find one like that. Otherwise you'll be in a state whatever happens.

What do they have to do anyway? Straighten the monocoque and install all-new suspension?

Relax. It'll probably be all right, fingers crossed.

First of all thanks for the replies.

Lud - fortunately the damage is not as bad as that. Some plonker drove or rather reversed into my car damaging the bumper and rear wing near the rear wheel arch. Scraped the paint away and it is starting to rust. It is just the car is finished is a non solid paint colour and wanted to make sure it will match etc. Also the a lot of plastic fell off from inside the bumper. Will want them to replace the bumper and not just tart it up.
