yr 2001 1.6 16v Petrol Engine misfire - I think! - simonc1978
Driving along the M1 on Sunday, in fifth, climbing a bit of hill, the engine made two loudish bangs apart 1 second apart. I lost power during the bangs but it came back straight away and was ok for the rest of the journey (another 150 miles).

Is this just a misfire or could it be more serious?

The three-letter engine code is needed to differentiate between two very different ignition systems used on that year; but a 16 valve has coil-over-plug ignition and the over-heating of one coil would give you that symptom.

Thanks.

It's a 16v SE... so I guess my next question is does this overheated coil point to anything more serious?
