Cam belt Change TDI PD -Cheaper than expected? - Glaikit Wee Scunner {P}
I'm going for my second cam belt change on the Passat TDI PD at around 105,000 miles.
Getting nervous with the interval revisions (last change at 60k). However the local VW specialist says that the water pump is external and does not require to be changed. So a 110,000 mile service plus belt change is being done for £340 all in.

The water pump on the PD engines is driven by the cambelt - have a look under the bonnet and you will not see a pulley for it.

Worse still, it's on the tight side of the cambelt and is subjected to high bearing loadings. Even worse than this, the OE pumps have plastic impellers which break up.

For the sake of an extra £30 or so, get the pump changed to one with a metal impeller. Maybe find a more knowledgeable specialist, too.

My independent recommends the water pump is done at every belt change otherwise you're asking it to last 100K or maybe more.

The PD seems a pretty reliable unit capable of big mileages so with all due respect, unless you're offloading the car, I'd recommend you reconsider, as potentially you're risking maybe a couple of grand of engine rebuild for a £50 saving.

My VAG specialist knows their motors and is a large established business.
The Passat apparently has the engine ancillaries mounted differently from other PD engines, such as in the Golf. I do not know which PD installation you are talking about above.
I have asked them politely again about the Passat water pump but if an expert does not want to take my money.....

Hmm. Unless this engine is less than a year old, I've not seen a PD engine with a water pump driven by anything other than its cambelt. I have a Passat (B5.5) clone and agree that the aux drive system is differently arranged to the Golf and other transverse installations.

My B5.5 has one engine driven viscous coupled fan and one electric fan and has a separate multiple Vee belt for the aircon compressor. Just a thought; is your Passat a B5.5 or a B6 (transverse)? It's possible that on the latest transverse DOHC PD engines the water pump drive could be different. This would be a welcome change.

I've just pulled a diagram of the Vag 1.9 DTi PD 130 and water pump is not driven by the cam belt it is driven via a V poly belt from the power steering pully which inturn is triven by the Aux Belt.

Interesting - have you got the model year or the engine designation (3 letter code)?

The TDI PD 110 is driven from the tight side of the cam belt. Regards Peter

And so was the 100 BHP version PD. Regards Peter

IIRC the water pump arrangment is different depending on whether the engine is longtitudinal (Passat, A4 etc) or transverse, (Golf, A3, etc).

My comments are all Passat related. The OP did not define the engine in his Passat but he details a 100 BHP one in his details. Regards Peter

My VW specialist was still saying pump did not need changing on the 100hp PD engine.
However - it will be done for £65 along with the other work at my request.
Thanks for your advice.

The Passat 100PS PD engine came out in 2001 and is an AVB; the cam belt drives the water pump.
