Belts vs Chains - terryb
All the recent talk in here has got me wondering - is there anywhere one can look to find out if an engine has a timing belt or a chain?

And on a personal level does anyone know if the 3.1 turbodiesel from VM (a la Jeep) has a belt or chain?

Terry,

The VM 2.5TD has a chain (as do their large petrols) so one might assume they carried this feature over to the larger engine.

Thanks David, that's reassuring

If it has a plastic belt cover at one end of the engine it has a timing belt. If it has no plastic cover it has a chain. Sometimes you can see the top links of the chain under the oil filler cap, sometimes not. (You can't in the Yaris D-4D engine, for example.)

Or metal cover not sealed to engine-ie. Ford OHC.
