Immobiliser problem - Richard Hall
I rang round for insurance quotes on my Audi, and managed to get £450 off the renewal premium. Problem is, the insurer won't cover me for theft unless I can tell them what kind of immobiliser is fitted, and provide proof of installation.

So I took the car to a local alarm/immobiliser specialist, who told me they can't identify the immobiliser. The reason? According to them, to be Thatcham approved there must be nothing on the immobiliser to say what model it is. So without the original documentation (which I don't have), I'm a bit stuck.

It is made by Foxguard, who apparently are no longer in business. Since it works fine, I don't want to have it replaced if I can avoid it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can identify the model?

try to contact the previous owner if you can, they may have the ID card that comes with the immobiliser. I have one for my Passat given to me by the old owner and it is right to say that you cannot get the immobiliser ID if you lose the documents...

good luck

David

Thanks very much indeed for that. I'll give them a ring in the morning.

While you're there, any ideas for repairing a leaking fuel filler pipe on a Polo? I wondered if I could replace the pipe with a piece of flexi radiator hose (the ends are OK, it's the middle that has a hole in it), but I suspect that radiator hoses might dissolve in petrol. I'm too mean to buy a new tank, too sensible to try welding a new filler pipe onto the old tank, and all the Polos in local breakers yards are missing their petrol tanks.

Richard,

Guess you might remember ours had a new VW tank fitted by the seller for a new MOT the week before we bought it.

My advice is over cautious given the nature of petrol. Only thing I would consider is visiting a boat chandlers (easy your way) and looking for the right diameter "unleaded petrol approved" hose and clips. Boats often have strange filler runs from the decks so there must be something they would have to do the job.

As you know unleaded can rot some "non-approved" hoses. In the Polo there is usually a route for fumes/spillage into the vehicle via a slightly rotted out breather hole in the car body that is hard to check, just where the breather goes from the filler neck into the vehicle and then out again at the sill.

David

I suspect that even if you find out what alarm it is, it won't be Thatcham cat 1 or 2, therefore the insurers won't recognise it for the discount.
Re: Immobiliser problem - martin
Perhaps you should quizz your insurer more. My insurance company do not ask for the immobiliser details, i just told them i had one and that was that. The discount was quite considerable to (£55) and it may be even more with an Audi...Phone around and get the general picture.
Re: Immobiliser problem - Richard Turpin
Lots of cars use rubber pipe as part of the standard fitting between filler neck and petrol tank.
Re: Immobiliser problem - Keith
With regard to the fuel filler pipe. The Mark 1 Golf has a short length of pipe from the main metal filler pipe to the tank.

This *might* be the correct diameter. I suspect VW would use the same dia pipe for most older models.

I think the breather connections are real close to the joint from the filler pipe to the tank. This is the joint where they all leak. You dont want to risk blocking the breathers do you? I would be surprised if the pipe is leaking at mid height.

Let us know how you get on?
