VW Speedo - cdew
Hi,

In the process of adapting a European Passat so it's legit for UK roads. I need to get the speedo changed so that it displays MPH. Is it possible to buy a simple dial so I can do a straight swap, without the need to buy something like this...

A very short answer

No

you need the cluster, or tipex and a biro. you may be able to buy an overlay that sticks on the existing speedo.

Be cautious about pod swapping. It's very likely that the instruments contain the immobilizer. Only the dealers can access the SKC code to adapt-in a new pod - if they'll even do it. Grief like that you can do without.

It's not hard BUT
You need to get a new one from the same model, you need it's login code (SKC) (of the one being sold).
Get the part number of the old one and potential new one...
e.g.
3B0 920 849 AX
3B0 = Passat
920 = Can bus
8 = mph, 9 = kph
4 = FIS centre LCD insert type
9 = immobiliser III (5=II, 6,7 & 9=III)
A = engine type (TDi etc...)
X = Exchange refurb unit

The newer cluster are generally back-ward compatible.

It is likely to need coding as per the old one with VAG COM too to tell it what features your car has.

Wouldnt that fail the MOT?

On my last post, 8/9 should read mph/kph, not mph/mph! {Now edited - DD}
