hi,ive just done the pads on a 94, 316i,my problem is that the light on the dash is still on.do i need to take it to a dealer?thanks for the help.

It is possible that you have not routed the sensor wires correctly. The "Brake linings" warning is based on the sensor wire getting grounded due to the pad wear allowing the wire to move towards, and eventually touch ground.
I assume you have the BMW OBC (on board computer) on the dash? this does not need reseting when you replace the pads. I suggest that you examine the sensor wires by the pads carefully to make certain that they are not touching ground. In the event that you do not have the OBC but just a brake warning light, then you may also check the level of fluid in the brake resevoir.

Yes, sensor works by wearing away a plastic bit and making a circuit. To save money you need to check pads and change them before the pad warning light comes on. Sensor is around 5 pounds I think.
