Body durabillity important, are any *galvanised* and without cambelts, with a Diesel engine?
speed and power not important.
Any comments on corrosion on the Transit or Ducato?

My non technical advice would say that the Transit will be the better buy. Transits have been around for years, they do the job well and I don't recall any horror stories of huge bills, especially if you are planning on keeping it for 15 years. The Ducato on the other hand shouts FIAT at the top of its voice and as such it sounds unreliable and possibly will need some expensive repairs in its lifetime.
Another thing to bear in mind is that a fair amount of Ford dealers have dedicated Transit departments, which should be able to keep your van in tip-top condition. I have known it happen before where Fiat dealers are reluctant to entertain work on the 'big' vans as they either can't get them in the workshop, haven't got a big enough ramp to lift the van, or they just don't want to know.
