Dry Sump Lubrication - type's'
Are there any well educated backroomers out there who can tell me what this is please ?

Essentially, it means that instead of being in the sump, the engine's oil reservoir is outside the engine. Oil that squirts out of the bearings etc is collected and sucked away.

Apart from meaning that the bottom of the engine can be slightly, but not much, higher (so can be set lower in the car lowering CoG), the main reason for dry sump lubrication is that it eliminates the oil surge problems that afflict, e.g., the Porsce Boxster according to HJ, at racing cornering speeds. With a wet sump the oil can be flung during cornering to one side or one end of the sump, so that the oil pump pick-up is starved of oil and there is a momentary loss of oil pressure. After that has happened a few times the engine is damaged. After a lot of times it goes pop.

It also allows you to have a much larger oil capacity if you have an engine with high oil usage or the oil also serves some purpose as a coolant eg air cooled engines

Ive only had this on a 911 - didnt realise that boxsters didnt have the same.

Should say - read your manual for instructions on how to check the oil level - it may not be as simple as putting a dipstick in.

Most piston aero engines use this, and carry a much larger volume of oil than the standard gallon or so you would have in a car engine.
The other reason is that aero engines may have to run at extreme angles or inverted, so all of the oil would be on the piston undersides causing obvious problems.

Many thanks for your input chaps.

Meriden Triumphs carried their oil in the frame tubes.

i used to find that when you put 1600 mk 2 cortina engines with an escort bashed sump on them into the mk 1 / 2 escort bodies that you used to get an oil pick up problem as you took a corner too fast and the idiot light came on.
Dry sumping was way too dear though so you just put an extra pint of duckhams 20/50 in the sump (no cats in those days) and cut down a bit on the bravado
