HELP!! No fuel to engine-MK3 Golf Diesel - cottontop
Hi all,

Got a bit of a problem. Driving from Stoke to Shrewsbury this morning and the engine began to lose power and then cut off....Parked up called the AA out who csiad it was more likely the Fuel Filter as he could see air going from the filer through to the engine (this was my thought as I run on biodiesel however it had been changed in June). Got the car started and carried onto Shrewsbury (only 5 miles out at this time). The car did the same, twice. We got the AA to pick us up and take us home. Once home I changed the fuel filter (i had a spare) and it still wouldn't get started.

I thought it could be a problem with the fuel sensor on the dash so went out and got 5 litre of diesel. Made no difference. I then took the fuel pip out from the fuel filter to see what was coming out when i started the engine....there was nothing. My thinking is that the problem is before the fuel filter. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be and the costs involved in getting it fixed ??

Any ideas at all would be great.

Thanks

Richard

There is a pump in the tank. I beleave the sender is combined with the pump. You engine a PD engine?

Nope i don't think its a PD as they started that in 98 and my Golf is a 96.

AS far as i know there is no pump in your tanks then. Have you ran the tank to nearly empty recently? Could have sucked up some rubbish and blocked the fuel line to the engine

Its currently 25% full....if that was the problem it shouldn't be much to get it sorted right ?? Thats if it is the problem !!

Sorry I lie, its closer to half full...

Sounds a bit like main power relay for the engine, the soldered joints inside go dry and cut power when the relay gets warm. You can open it up and resolder the joints for an almost free fix ;-)

If it was that Dox, would it explain the lack of fuel going into the fuel filter and therefore the engine ?

Any other ideas anyone ??

Sorry to suggest the relay as being the cause.

The main pump on the engine sucks fuel from the tank, if you disconnect the pipe to the filter the pump can't suck fuel from the tank can it?

Are all the pipe in good condition and fastened securely?

The return to the tank has a white non return valve in it, there's a seal underneath that also can cause trouble, sorry in advance if these are not the answers you're looking for either ;-)

All the pipes look fine...I'm at a loss to know what it might be....the fact that there's shed loads of air in the fuel lines is worrying. Taking it into a garage will be like writing a blank cheque !!

G W Dales (diesel specialists), Newcastle St, Middleport have a good reputation and have been helpfull to me in the past.

Assuming the original filter was blocked due to Biodiesel cleansing (if you have only used biodiesel for a few hundred miles??), you do know that the starter will need a fair bit of cranking to draw fuel up the pipes to the pump again... maybe a couple of injector connections will also need to be cracked open to bleed the injector pipes if they have run dry.

There was a similar thread recently which suggested the other two scenarios, ie, air ingress between tank and filter, and blockage in the tank. A good idea suggested was to somehow lightly pressurise the tank at the filler cap to see if fuel could be forced from the leak to identify its position.

I changed the filter after 800 biodiesel miles, and I've been using it for over 5,000 miles...

As for the cranking, I've done that too much as the battery has gone dead on me and I'm getting someone out to charge it for me....
