MG ZR Door lock grinding noise - mss1tw
Posting on behalf of a friend. He has a 54 plate ZR.

The drivers side door lock sometimes makes an awful grinding noise when locking or unlocking.

It sounds like cogs grinding but he's been told that they use a solenoid and if they don't get enough power they make a noise similar as they fire repeatedly. (This is the jist of what I was told, I've slept since then ;o)

Any ideas? He's had the door cards out but it's just a sealed unit...

My mate had the same problem on his ZR.

After trying everything he stripped out all the inners of all doors around where the locks were.

He found the lock on the boot had filled with water. When he drained it and cleaned it up a bit all worked fine and the noise disappeared.

The noise re-appeared again afterwards and, again he 'drained' the boot lock. The noise went away again. I haven't asked him about it in a while but he was draining it every few months last time I checked.

Hope that helps - it might be worth looking at all the locks as his noise was coming from the rear. If your friends is coming from a specific door - check there first (I guess).

Cool, thanks Steve. He has mentioned that the boot leaked in the spare tyre well when he got it, so that may well be it,

Good luck - I'd certainly give it a try.

If it's not that - then it could what's detailed in the link. If it is, try taking it to a Rover / MG specialist as by the looks of it it could be a common problem:
