Exhausts: Flexi-piping - Steve G
Does anyone have experience of repairing exhaust flexi-piping ?
Apparently you can buy the flexi stuff in accessory shops for making repairs to this kind of piping.
Any advice very much apprieciated

You can buy a new flexi in various lengths and diameters and also different metals,In my experience patched up exhausts do not last very long

Steve G Don't despair!

My Previa blew its flexible section at 65,000, -unfortunately the catalyst comes with it, Toyota price £650ish plus labour. Found specialist exhaust co. in Woking who welded in their own s/s flexible section -cost £100. Went on to do a further 110,000 miles and still fine when I sold her on with the rest of the exhaust, and the entire car for that matter, original.

Never advisable, Steve.
Most exhausts go bad from the inside out, so patching the outside is like painting over rising damp ...
Also, the very fact that the thing is flexible (ie Non rigid) means it can seriously affect back-pressure to the engine, which is never a good thing.

Steve,
The flexi pipe does work. It used to be part of many OE exhausts a few years ago. Many 'one off' and custom systems used to be made using flexy pipe.
It's still used today on all sorts of exhaust systems. There are a few problems though. It needs to be brazed at each end - pipe clips don't usually work. It needs to be a decent length otherwise it won't be able to flex. It needs to be supported properly. Unless you have some sort of 'special' system it would probably be easier to fit a new pattern exhaust.
Re: Exhausts: Flexi-piping - Tomo
Can't you get it in stainless?
Re: Exhausts: Flexi-piping - Andy Bairsto
Flexi is in comon use most Citroens have the first half a metre in flexi

Thanks for the replies.
It's my brothers car which has the problem. Its a Alfa 164 3.0 V6. The flexi piping is just between manifold downpipes and the cat about a foot in length.Apparently there are no pattern copies and Alfa charge £420 for a replacement section.
I have a MIG welder but wont be much good if the flexi stuff can only be brazed.Think i will pay a view visits to my local accessory shops to see whats available. If repairing this section is not feasible i think a new stainless system will be the best bet.
