Stalling Escort - A.wharton
Can anyone help me with a problem on my 1992 Ford Escort 1.6LX CVH (carburettor version).
As soon as the engine gets up to normal operating temperature and I come up to a halt in traffic or at a junction, the revs just plummet when I take my foot off the accelerator. Nine times out of ten the revs pick up again and the car returns to normal idle speed but on the odd occasion the engine completely stalls. It re-starts every time no problem. The carburettor has been stripped, cleaned and reassembled but the fault is still there.
I have been told that it could be a 'stepper motor' or the 'throttle postion sensor' on the side of the carb but both sound expensive and could require specialist tuning equipment to reset. Any suggestions would be much appreciated?

Has it always done it, or is it problem that has recently surfaced?

It's been going on for years, I've just to put up with it and adjusted my driving to compensate. I've just been told about this web site and thought someone might have some knowledge of the problem
Re: Stalling Escort - vansboy
Has the fuel supply line been moved & is it near the manifold (too close) causing the fuel to be evaporated?
This was an HJ problem solved some time back on Renaults.

The carburetter equipped versions of these cars have a delayed throttle closing system which,I believe,is intended to prevent the very problem that you are experiencing. May I suggest you contact your nearest branch of 'Tune-Up'(see under Car Engine Tuning in Yellow Pages) as adjustment of this cannot be briefly explained. Incidentally you would not have a 'stepper motor' or 'throttle position sensor' on a manual transmission carburetter version.
Re: Stalling Escort - Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up Ltd.)
I have come across a couple of these very late carburetted engines with stepper motor and TPS, both automatics, both stalling or revving wildly. Seems to be a software problem in the carb ECU. Weber produce a replacement carb for this car which utilises a manual choke. In both cases the customer was unwilling to spend the money so I don't know how effective the conversion is. If someone has suggsted the TPS (throttle position sensor) then i would check this first. Most TPS are potentiometers with a coil type track and a metal contact which sweeps over the track.Sometimes the track can becomes dirty or worn so erratic throttle response occurs. The most common place for the track to become dirty is the first position (no throttle). Might be worth stripping it down and giving it a good clean. Cheap solution if it works.
Good luck

Good point David ...
Which version is it CFi /Carb ..??
Did they make a 1.6 CFi ??
Re: Stalling Escort - Stevieboy
Adrian,

The reason I asked ... was that I had a J-Reg 1.6LX Escort as a Company Lease car. The car exhibited a similar problem, and even after many trips to the local Ford dealer (9 trips in 13 months for various problems including the stalling one) they were unable to fix it.

The dealer even got the Ford 'Travelling Troubleshooter' to have a look, but to no avail. Did get the loan of a 'nice' Mondeo saloon as a swap for 3 weeks whilst they stripped the engine to try and cure the fault :o)

In the end, the dealer admitted defeat, and the Lease company gave me a fully loaded Montego TDi instead. An excellent trade.

I was happy, the Lease Company was happy, and I imagine that my little red Escort, J--- KLX, went to auction.

Have you tried looking on usenet? alt.autos.ford.escort might be worth a try, and the people on uk.rec.cars.maintenance are definately knowledgable about such things.

Has this car definately got a stepper motor and a throttle position sensor and an ecu? Or is it just a basic carb type CVH if you know what i mean. One of the biggest problems with CVH engines is that the breather systems get blocked up and cause them to run erratically and I know of one 1400 CVH that displays similar symptoms and the only way to make the car idle properly is to diconnect one of the breather hoses on the bottom of the air filter and plug the end of it. I don't know why but it works!

Simon

The carb on my Escort is a Weber TLD and after checking my Haynes manual page 4A-18 can confirm it definately has a throttle position sensor and what I thought was a stepper motor, in the book its called an 'idle speed control motor' if that makes any sense.
