I would be grateful if anyone could advise me how often a cam belt should be replaced on an Audi A3, 1.6L 1998 model.
My mother has a 98 model with 36k on the clock.
Cheers

Many thanks. Thats not far away from me.
I was wondering if you know the consequences of broken timing belt in the Audi A3 1.6L 98 engine. Would a broken belt damage the pistons and valves??? or is there sufficient clearance.
I would also be greatful for any advice on fuel filters on the aforementioned model of car. The Audi book didnt mention anything about changing the fuel filter and consequently had never been changed - until 2 days ago- when it sprung a leak. At intervals -time and millage - would you recommend changing the fuel filter.
Cheers

I had a friend with the car ask the same question, and it was every 80Kmiles. Not sure what the time limit is though. I wouldnt like to risk it over 5 years between timing belt swaps, if mileage is low.

if this car has not had the belt done then mother is pushing boat out very far in my opinion and engine will be wrecked if it lets go

Not that it's generally possible to disagree with oldman but I agree with him this time too on the timing belt.
Personally I'd do the fuel filter every major service (which I think is two years/20k miles on this car). Only £6 for the part from Euro and probably not much labour at all.

This is an interference angine and the damage done would ber circa £1200-£1500. Get the belt changed. The fuel filter is not usually changed until the 80K mark but I have seen a few which corroded clips and even corroded cannisters so I would change every 6 or 7 years. Fuel these days is pretty clean. Regards Peter
