Diesel Estate rec's? - big_mike
Hi,
I am in the market for a diesel estate. Budget £1-3000. Got two great big Weimaraners to carry arround, although the Subaru Impreza estate (as the Subaru is now gone I guess it's time to get something sensible) was big enough for both of them.

Car will end up doing a lot of miles going to working tests, shows and field trials. I'm about 6'3" so needs to be reasonably roomy.

Any suggestions welcome!

A SAAB 9-5 estate is ideal for dogs, but probably out of your price range.

So a Mondeo or 406 would fit the bill.

Or sell the Shiny dogs, get a Malinois and do shutzhund.

If it was a matter of getting a vehicle to drive the dogs the local fields etc, then any old thing would do.
However for your budget you're going to have to be really lucky to get a vehicle which would handle frequent long runs.

I've run a couple of 406's from new up to 120K miles, and they start to need lots of brake and suspension work as the mileage mounts up. And mine were only doing 'motorway miles' - not crashing about across fields!

If you're handy with cars (or there happens to be a specialist nearby) an older Merc *might* be good, but one significant failure could render the car worthless.

Xantia Estate? Would the Citroen suspension be useful?

Old volvo diesel estate 900 or 700 series virtually bulletproof. There are a few in Autotrader. Also Vauxhall Omega with BMW diesel. Good hardworking motor.

I would try and get a Volvo 850, the TD5 is a much nicer engine than the dead awakening old unit fitted to the 700/900.

90s Passat TDI? Plenty on Autotrader in your budget and you should be able to find one that's been well looked after.
