E30 320 v E34 525 - ricohman
Can anyone tell me if i will be better off if i trade my E30 320 auto for a E34 525 auto.
Is a 525 better on petrol than a 320, is the servicing costs the same?

The five series is a bigger heavier car with a bigger engine so it won't do as much MPG as the 3 series and servicing will probably be more expensive too although it shouldn't differ too much as the engines are pretty similar.

The E34 is a far more refined and comfortable car than the E30. Also if the you're looking at one of the 24V 2.5 6cyl engines ('91 onwards) then their fuel consumption isn't that much worse than the 12V 2.0 6cyl (The 24V engines were not available for the E30). The autobox will also be 5 speed on the 24V versions as opposed to 4 speed on the 12V versions.

Personally, I'd go for a 525(24V)Auto over a 320(12V) Auto everytime. .....try and fine a good one with the SE spec and IMO you're on to a winner. They do have their weak points - cooling system, suspension components etc. but most independant specialists will know about these and parts are relatively cheap from the likes of GS&F, ECP etc.

Forgot to add....the "newest" E30 you'll get your hands on will be a '91 on H or J plate (unless it's a cabrio, which continued for a few years after that). Where as the E34 range, introduced in '88 continued till '96, when the E39 was introduced.

I'd still go for a 525i SE or Sport (though the ride on the Sport is a little harsher, the interior, especially the seats are superb).
