scenic fuel filter

i have a renault scenic 2002 1.9dci.it has been suggested to me that i should change the fuel filter as it is a probable cause to my jerking at steady speeds then dissapearing on acceleration.it also seems to lack power on the lower end rev range.i have never had to change a fuel filter before or even know any one that has had to.what is the likelyness of this being the prob.the car has only covered 33600 miles and the wrong fuel was put in(previous owner)at 24000 miles,would the filter have not been changed then???also do i need to replace or can i clean with airline at work.
any comments and feedback would be appreiciated
