A key is no longer just a 'key' - they are electronically coded to the car via a 'PIT' (programmable information tag chip) inside the key. £120 is about the going rate, although you should be able to get one a bit cheaper by going to one of the specialist automotive key suppliers.

You won't get a coded key for a modern Mercedes for £20 - it must be an old Merc.

I thought I recalled a post where it was stated that these 'codes' are your property, as the owner of the car and you can't/shouldn't be charged for access to them.

They are but you have to pay to have the key programmed fair or unfair you have no real choice in the matter.

Had a couple of these. I pay £80 and program myself. Dead easy to do on the Nissans. Not done any Toyota, so they may be more difficult.

You did not do it on a new Primera yourself.

Sigh...

OK, you know it all. Let's leave it there.

Explain how you did it without the codes I am eager to learn and save a bob or two the next it occurs.

If you're refering to a Primera fob, by the power of Google, I previously posted a link on this site on how to program one:-

I have seen this but unfortunately it does not work with new Nissans. You need to have the car plugged in to the latest software with the unprogrammed key installed with your personnel codes , it takes around 1 hour hence the labour charge over the £80 key cost.
