vw golf mileometer lcd failure

vw golf mileometer lcd failure - confused2
i have an 1995 mk 3 golf and the mileometer and clock have started to fail.it now shows half of some numbers and none in some columns. is this a common problem and can it be rectified without replacing the whole unit?

I don't know about Golf displays --- perhaps someone will be along shortly ---- but many of those displays in electronics in general, have connections associated with each 'bar'of the numeral. Thus, ideally, you would be able to push/waggle a plug to get them to connect again but, by a well known law, it probably aint that easy.

On my Polo the same happened. If you thump the dashboard it works again so a bad connection is likely.
