unleaded head on A series? - steve
How can I tell if my A plus cylinder head [age unknown] from a 1000 cc Metro is suitable for unleaded petrol. The previous owner said it was.

Ring the Service Dept of a Rover Main Dealer. They have notes with dates and will confirm yes or no.

Unless you know the engine code and number of the original engine you are a bit stuck. I know it is a fag but drop an exhaust valve out and you will clearly see if a hardened insert has been fitted into the head. If not, drop the rest of the valves out and have hardened inserts fitted to the exhaust valve seats. Not expensive, around 30 quid a seat.

Assuming you have the engine no., have a look at www.andrewfairley.demon.co.uk/unlead.html

Could we grind our valves in, now and again, just as we used to?
