Audi A4 Gear Box/Diff - T-Bod
My Audi is making a noise like that of a wheel bearing on its way out.....the bearings have been checked but no problem with them....my mechanic thinks it could be the differential....if so what can be done?....could it be something else?....and how much will it hurt my pocket?....also is the diff part of the gear box?...and would it be easier to get a reconditioned gear box?

The car is a 1.8 audi A4 se 1998

If originally you thought it was a wheel bearing, is it a drive shaft?

I can not honestly say, but it is certainly worth checking out first.

However, I hope any good mechanic would have checked already.

Well, these Audi diffs do have a reputation for failing - its the output bearings that go. Your mechanic should be able to check for that fairly conclusively. Its not a cheap repair - the transaxle will have to be removed and split. Depending on where you live and who does it, I would say a £600-1000 job.
