Perhaps your roundabout problem was caused by an American tourist: the Dept of Foreign Affairs in Washington issues information on driving outside the US. Among this is the admonition to familiarize oneself with "traffic circles"

Holland is pretty devoid of roundabouts too, and my son was hit on a roundabout in the UK - by a Dutch tourist - in my car on my insurance!.
