At the weekend I took my old engine oil to the council waste site, and as I was disposing of it into the very large container, I wondered what happend to all this waste oil, is it recycled and if so used for what?? Anyone??

Oil can be cleaned and reused as it doesn't lose its viscosity or basic ability - the cheap oils you might have bought for a "banger" will have been recycled oil with new additives.

Alternatively, around here at least, there's a cement producer that burns it in the high temperature furnace.

Used engine lube was often mixed with ships bunker fuel and burnt in the main engines.
