Petrol proof tape - teabelly
Is there such stuff?

I have a perished petrol pipe and the garage I take the car to is 40 miles away and before I get there it will either a) burst completely b) i'll pass out due to the stench of petrol. I only noticed the petrol smell this morning (had to abandon trip to supermarket and go back home and get another car :-) ) and I can see the pipes around the petrol pump are cracked nastily and the one after the pump has wet marks on the paint below so it must be coming out there when the engine is running.

I'm only guessing - duct tape?

Otherwise, I have previously made a very temporary repair with pvc insulating tape by ensuring pipe was totally dry and then keeping a good taughtness on the tape when applying it.

or even tautness!

See if you can get hold of some self amalgamating tape. Its like insulating tape, but it melds into itself where it overlaps, to form a really good seal.

I bought my roll from a yacht chandlers, & have seen it in some DIY stores.

It's a useful bit of kit to have in the tool box, can be used to repair waterpipes etc.

None of the tapes mentioned in previous threads will resist seepage from petrol, and to use the car in this parlous state is risking a major fire/explosion, which could result not only in personal injury , but also other road users.

If you have an alternative vehicle, you would be advised to use this to collect the relevant replacement pipe from your nearest supplier.

If you have (if you don't have then imho you should ;) ) AA cover, call them & they'll doubtless fit a bit of new pipe for you, FOC.

If I was confident enough to fit the pipe myself I wouldn't be asking about tape :-) Would using several metal pipe clips over the persished section be a safer alternative to tape?

I thought about calling out the breakdown people but as I have had two genuine breakdowns in the last 2 months on two different cars I am loathe to call them out for something which I shouldn't....

Can you tell us what the make and model of the vehicle you are tring to fix?
I would guess it is quite a few years old as you can see where it is leaking. I have only had to change fuel hoses once and I drive cars til they are scrapped.
I admire you saying the job is not for you.
Forget any tape etc. as it is just too dangerous to bodge it.
Consider calling out one of the mobile tuners and tell them your problem. It should be a straight forward job and not cost too much. Give any local one man band and ask for a quote.

Hiya teabelly.

I wouldn't use tape. Petrol will dissolve the adhesive and the tape will fail.
I note that you're not happy to join the pipe, but I'd nip into your local Halford's, if there's one nearby and buy some new petrol pipe, then ask them to fit it.

If there isn't one you have 2 options:
1: Get some metal pipe a fraction smaller and sleeve the existing pipe over the metal, then use Jubilee Clips to effect a seal

2: Join some new pipe to the old one. Unclip the old pipe and pull it, bringing the new pipe with it. When all pipe is new, join up each end.

Just beware that youe pump will have a pressure-fed side and a return. Air in the return could strand you. Leaks in the pressure side could quickly spurt fuel everywhere.

A nice job for this time of year. Don't you know someone nearby, who'll do it for you?

Good luck,

Sean

Do you have a local motorist shop?.They will usualy supply petrol pipe and fit for you.It isnt expensive and in some cases they wont charge for fitting. even if they do it wont be much for 10 minutes work.I would not advise any of the above..But if you ask locally someone must be knowledgeable enough to help you out

You did not say what car it is,but,if fuel injected, pressure is much higher than for carburetted and,as has been mentioned, there is a definite fire hazard. Is it 40 miles to your nearest garage,or the one you use?Under the circumstances I would contact the nearest one and ask them to send someone out.

Having nearly lost my Type 2 VW camper due to a leaking fuel hose, I don't think I'd mess with tape or any other bodge. What starts as a weep quickly becomes a fire - and I've seen Allegro go up in flames, in traffic. Only the fact that I saw it leaking onto the road and moved away prevented my vehicle from being caught in its fire ...

Hi Sean.

I think the pipe is so bad that if I start the car again it will fail entirely. I don't want to push my luck twice! I didn't think Halfords would have pipe and annoyingly I was only in there last week looking for other things.

If air in the return is an issue how do I make sure that there isn't any/remove it if there is?

The car is a lancia delta integrale so you can't just take it to anyone as the engine access is quite restricted and there are a lot of gubbins that can get knocked which someone that doesn't know the car wouldn't know what they had done. The added complication is that this pipe goes under a large brackety thing so you have to take that off and move a few other bits out of the way before you can get to the pipe. It is reasonably visible though but in a mire of bits hence preferred solution to get it to its usual specialist as he knows what everything is for.

There is a chap I take an another car to and he'll probably come out. He has one of mine at the moment so I am sure he can drop one off and fix another :-)

Well then,

There is your solution. Get him on the case. The pipe you want is at Halfords. They have counters with alternators, brake shoes, numberplates and suchlike. You go to the counter and tell the bloke or girl that they have fuel pipe on a roll. (It's like Woolworth's was years ago. Not their counter. Haven't a clue what's there. Are you sure? ) Yes. Black. half-inch diameter. "What did you say?" What is this "inch" ? Oh my!

Anyway. Folks know my opinions of Italian cars, so I won't digress further. Let me just say that this is a simple job.

Oh yes, and to get the air out, just use gravity. You know, one pipe above the other, till fuel comes, then whap it onto its spigot.

Good luck,

Sean
