Erratic wipers - Passat - GrahamF1
The wiper electronics on my 1999 Passat have been possessed by demons.

When I flick the lever downwards to get one 'wipe', the result varies considerably. Infrequently I get the intended one wipe, but it is more commonly three or four. It has from time to time decided upon as many as eight or nine wipes, sometimes with the motor eventually stopping part way through a cycle.

Any ideas?

Possibly a problem with the automatic park switch- if such things exist nowadays. Used to be bulit into the wiper motor and were known to stay on.

You may have inadvertently flicked the washers on at the same time - this provides four sweeps on my VW Bora from single or intermittent settings.

I would have said it was the rain sensor if you had one fitted, but this is activated (in my case at least) on the intermittent setting (one upwards movement).

Might just be worth checking the fuse for correct seating or corrosion.

Its the park switch on the wiper motor or the relay. Probably the park switch. Dont know the Passat so it might be a new motor assembly or a simple repair.
