97 Primera 1.6 driveshaft oil seal - Kostic
My car has developed a slight gearbox oil leak. Looks like it comes from the right hand side driveshaft oil seal (not sure yet). If this is confirmed, how much should I expect to be charged to get it fixed ? Should I refer this to a main dealer or will an independent garage do ?

Thanks,

Kostic

Just got a quote for the job, £155 plus VAT. This is at gearbox specialists. Does this sound as a reasonable quote for an oil seal replacement ?

This seems dear to me. If it is the shaft output seal which has gone, the normal procedure would be
Drain gearbox oil
Remove shaft, usually by releasing a suspension joint
Remove old seal
Fit new seal
Refit shaft/suspension joint
Refil gearbox.

New parts would be just the seal and gearbox oil.
The last seal I had replaced was on a BX16v and the seal cost approx. £10 and labour was about 1/2 hour.
I don't think the Primera would be much different.

Thanks mjm.

It looks like it is a liitle bit more difficult to take the shaft out on Primera, as the mech originally said it would take 4 hours (!) labour, and then went away and came back with the above quote. I then called the nearest main dealer and they quoted me 1 1/2 hours labour plus parts (oil seal & gearbox oil). Still quite expensive, but cheaper than the independant specialist (which looks wierd to me).
Unfortunately, these are all recommendation I've got in the area and I need the car fixed quickly, so it goes to the dealer tomorrow.

No problem, hope you've saved a bit, anyway.

Had it done at the dealer. Now I wonder, the invoice shows 2l of gearbox oil. IIRC, it takes 2.9l. Could it be that they undefilled the gearbox ? I would have thought, you just fill it till it drips out of the filler/level hole. Could it be that there was nearly a litre left when they drained it to replace a seal ? Should I question the dealer about it ?

When a gearbox is drained, it is not unusual for a quantity of oil to be left in it. The oil tends to fill crevices etc in the box. This applies to other fluids, for example it is almost impossible to totally drain a cooling system. I made the mistake of misreading the manual for my Citroen when changing the LHM fluid. I bought 6 litres, reread the manual before I did the job and found that 6 litres was a total fill, only 3 needed for a change.
If it is not out of your way, it may be worth popping into the dealer, just to be sure.

Time sounds about right to me - had the driver's side oil seal replaced on my P12 under warranty recently - would say up to a couple of hrs.

As for oil, would assume some would be left in as you aren't removing the drain plug. You don't need to as it's a sealed system, unlike engine oil which gets contaminated !

Answers a question of mine, is that the oil would have to be replaced - i.e. drains out when seal replaced. No need to replace my gearbox oil for some time !
