With acknowledgemnets to Pocket GPS World, have a look at the latest Microsoft route planning technology:-

Go to tinyurl.com/4dcn5 and enter the following:

Start: Norway, city Haugesund
End: Norway, city Trondheim

Then press "Get Directions" and lean back for a nice chuckle... NAVTEQ maps, by the way.

Autoroute (V2001? I think) once told me the fastest way from Lymington in the New Forest was to drive onto a car ferry to the Isle of Wight and get another one off to Portsmouth.

Autoroute 2003 tells me that to to get from Ouistreham ferry port in Normandy to anywhere else in France I have first to get the ferry to Portsmouth and back again. Makes yer wonder about sat nav, dunnit?

In the address bar:

change "RouteType=Quickest"
to "RouteType=Shortest"

and it still takes you on a return ferry crossing to Newcastle Upon Tyne!

What's the problem -- it is shorter.

The most obvious flaw in this program is that it fails to take ferry crossings into accounts when it's calculating distance. A flaw I hope you can disable (i.e. "Don't go by Ferry" option) in AutoRoute.

Or should there be a "cheapest route" option?
