Badge thieves - Nickdm
- Woken up this morning to find that some urchin has pinched the Volvo logo from the grille of my S60. I thought this little game had died out about 12 years ago? Or is it in vogue again? The again, I am in France, maybe "fashion" takes longer to reach here...

I s'pose the Volvo dealer will charge me 40-odd quid plus VAT for a replacement badge too... Didn't VW replace all theirs free in the 80s, to foster brand loyalty etc?!

Not as far as i've seen. Although someone did pinch the Nissan badge of the back of my wife's Almera. Quite what anybody would want with either a Volvo or Nissan badge is beyond me.

Try a scrapyard of eBay first

Yes they did, taking out big newspaper adverts, but the problem was very widespread, as kids were copying the Beastie Boys (aah, memories....). Perhaps they would've been better off offering the badges to the kids and cut out the vandalism.

IIRC thats exactly what they did end up doing!

If you see a '96 onwards Ford Escort you often see the R and the S missing for obvious reasons.

Don't get it.

I assume that he means other escort owners steal them so they can badge their car as a sporty RS, since it'd be exactly the right size, typeface, etc.
On the other hand, isn't the 'scort' bit in lower-case? So I could be wrong.
Badge thieves - Humpy
I've seen thousands of escorts and noticed all sorts of things but never that.

The two versions i notice most are 'SORTED' and 'SCROTE'

>Try a scrapyard of eBay first<. What a great scam - nick the badges, flog them on Ebay, nick another ...

May be cheaper at a Dealer in France than in the UK.

Other half got the big Vauxhall emblem nicked of her new shape Vectra.

Why????? It must have come off in bits surely?

And what a pig the adhesive was to get off it! All manner of 'usual suspect' solvents tried.

Gawd, that's a relief. I was half way down the sett before I realised it's about *badge* thieves.
Badge thieves - Cardew
I think this 'craze' started with the old Mercedes 3 pointed star that was mounted on the radiator cap - ditto the Rolls Royce Silver Lady. Initially they simply unscrewed to enable the radiator to be topped-up.

I had a Merc when the star was spring loaded and folded flat. I had quite a bit of damage done once in Germany with someone trying to wrench it off.

Cos even thieves have standards?
Badge thieves - Ian (Cape Town)
Not round here, matey!
The wise money is on removing them yourself, and sticking them back on when you sell the car!
But then you get hassled by street-kids offering you 'a set of badges for your car...' for the price of a bottle of glue (Which is NOT used for re-applying BMW badges!!!) - ie considerably less than the local stealership charges!

As mentioned above - it becomes a self-perpetuating industry.

And I thought Cape Town was such a civilised place. Friend just back from there was effusive about it, especially how cheap the good wine was.

Perhaps the beastie boys fans have matured in their old age and have moved onto Volvo's?

Nice thought, they all turn 40 this year.

Quick google brings up that one of them (Adrock) has a pick up with 40" wheels.

had some kids try and nick badge off my car in coventry last year came out to find it hanging off. took it off to stop it being nicked put it back on when i got home and came out 15 mins later to find out it had been nicked, unfortunately putting a new badge on would have required a new grill as they had broken the clips.
