A grinding Saxo - Bob McC
I have a 98 Saxo VTR which has developed a dry grinding noise on the overrun. It seems to come from the front offside and occurs after the car has travelled about a mile at normal speeds. It never occurs when the car is under power. Is it the shaft or is it the bearing? Can anyone out there shed some light on my problem.

Not anything so simple as a brake pad worn down to backing and contacting the disc? Does it get better/worse if you brake? Does it appear to come from engine bay or wheels? Wheel bearings could also be a possibility, although that tends to come and go with cornering.Does it vary according to car speed or engine speed? Have you plenty of oil in your gearbox? (!!) Could be something like an alternator on the way out or even water pump. Have you checked that things like the radiator fan (or suchlike ancillaries) is not fouling anything?

A friend had a Xsara which started knocking noises from the engine bay on the overrun, again fine when under load. Turned out to be a knackered differential and needed a new gearbox. Maybe a citroen thing?

Stupid question, but what's overrun?

Jesse - car trying to go faster than engine; foot off accelerator; engine braking. Call it what you want.
