Megane Scenic - burning smell - bka1
My 1999 1.9DTi Scenic produces a slight burning smell from the exhaust when idling. It smokes occasionally on acceleration but not excessive. Is the burning smell produced by the catalytic converter (I presume one is fitted)and is this normal? Or is it oil? Does not seem to use oil.

No its not normal, diesel cat or not. In fact with a diesel less so as they dont run so hot.

Define the "smokes on acceleration" bit, as this may be normal for a diesel. Smokes from where?

Fraid it sounds like you will have to warm the car up, leave it idling and start crawling round to find out where the smell is coming from.

Smokes from exhaust, not noticed until dark & headlights from car behind pick it up whilst pulling away. Burning smell definitely coming from tailpipe with exhaust emissions. Could it be some internal engine problem?

"Smokes from exhaust, not noticed until dark & headlights from car behind pick it up whilst pulling away."

Absolutely 100% normal for any diesel car.
Keep an eye on your temperature guage, oil levels, water level, and check fuel consumption.
