Have had the brother-in-laws car on loan recently and just about to return it.The 1st and 5th gears can be sticky to get in and I wondered if this was par for the course or can I remedy this cheaply before I hand it back.The car has done 99,000 and has the FIRE 1000cc engine,mucho gracias

Hi,

It may be worth watching the gear linkage while someone jer jer jiggles the gear lever. If there is any sloppiness in the joints and bushes, it won't help gear selection.

In addition, if the selection is generally a bit stiff/awkward, a spot of lube on the many joints (including the ones you can access by peeling back the boot at the base of the gearlever by the "carpet") will help.

The other thing to consider is total lack of gearbox oil:
the inboard driveshaft boot perish, and virtually all the oil is lost...
Filler plug is 12mm hex.

Change the gearbox oil. £10 maximum. Bound to help, especislly if you splash out on synthetic oil.
