The wifes'MK2 Golf Gti has just about had-it,and we're in the market for a decent cheap run-around,our budget is 1,200-1,500.There seems to be so much rubbish around at this price, has anybody got any views on whats good and whats not?Something Golf sized would be ideal. The golfs at this price seem to be heaps!

You're right, it's a real lottery in this price range. Much of the stuff is little better than some cars being scrapped. Particularly if at a small dealer or home traders.

Just as an example that there is good stuff around...

I've just helped to introduce seller to buyer for a very genuine car. A 1996 Peugeot 306 1.4i. Taxed, 9mths MOT. Airbag, PAS, sunroof, good stereo etc. No rust, no dents, immaculate interior. Full history from new, stamped service book and a file of receipts going back years. I've known it for 3yrs. Just had a full service 500mls ago. Up to date on coolant, brake fluid and gearbox fluid/oil changes. Seller honestly declared it needed one tyre, and then a timing belt in another 3000mls to make it perfect.

Sold at a no-haggle £1250.

They are about but easier to find if you're not rushed. If you have to buy "right now" there is always loads of dross to filter out.

How about a nice 94M Peugeot 306 XRDT? Cheap to insure, cheap to fuel, pretty quick for what they are, and they've got electric windows, PAS, etc.

Or buy a Citroen ZX which is more or less the same car, but half the price because it has Chevrons on the bonnet not a Lion.....

Mind you, I have been looking for one for about month and no luck on a decent one so far (but then I'm at the £700 mark, and ZX diesels have evaporated from the auctions around here just when I want one. Humph...!)

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Or an M reg 1.6 LX Escort? Mine has body-colour bumpers and is post facelift so doesnt look dated, nicer interior than a 306 (says GF), not overly slow, mine was £1200 with 55,000 miles and hasn't fallen apart yet (touch wood). Not as much fun to drive as a 306/ZX mind.

you could try a good salvage yard in the essex area, that deals in repossed small cars under the £1200 mark, over 1400cars to choose from.i found them on goggle search ,was a great find.
