Hi, just wondering if someone out there can help me. I have a Golf TDi CL 1.9 (90BHP - 1995 / 87K Miles). The car is serviced every year by a VW dealer but this morning it decided to completely give up on me. I was driving in third just changing into fourth (up hill) and the car lost all power with a huge cloud of black smoke coming form the exhaust, it juddered along for a little while and just cut out. I tried to re-start the car but it just revved up to about 4K RPM on it's own then came back down to 1K and up again to 4K then cut off again. Again a big cloud of black smoke from the back.
On the floor beneath the exhaust opening there was a black deposit of 'soot'.
First bit of advice I've had is that the turbo's gone, but I an air flow meter was fitted 1.5 years ago. At the time that this went the car lost power but it would still run at about 35mph.
Anyway, I'm looking at a bill of about £600 to replace the turbo so if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

If the Turbo had gone it should still start and tick over and run at reduced power, sounds like a fuel/pump issue.

That was my first thought, I've managed to get it to my local dealer so hopefully they can give me an answer soon.
Thanks very much,
Wayne

sounds to me like an air leak into the fuel system.
try unplugging the air flow meter as the car may run better in limp home mode. also 1 of the injectors has a needle lift sensor in it to m easure the fuelling in the ecu try to find the wiring plug to it and disconnect. this may be faulty and causing the ecu to make the engine think that its at full throttle.

Thank you for the advice. Why would this cause the black smoke, even if the car was at full throttle it shouldn't burn anything. I've checked the oil level and this has come down quite a bit during the last two weeks i.e from Max to Min.

I don't reckon an air leak would cause all this black smoke

Hi, thanks for the reply. Do you think that oil getting into the chamber could be causing the problem, if it actually can get in there. Would the seals around one or two of the pistons cause this?
Sorry, I'm not that clued up on cars.
Thanks

Nah, definately not - oil being burnt would appear as white or blue smoke from the exhaust. Black smoke indicates excess fuelling which could be (a) Excess Fuel or (b) Lack of air
The causes of the above are numerous.
I'd try a Bosch Diesel Diagnostic dealer in the first instance. Cheaper than a VW Dealer and probably more sympathetic and less clinical.

Thanks a lot for your help, at least it's coming across as not being the turbo which is something. It may be something to do with the air flow meter that was fitted, I also had a new air flow pipe fitted at the same time because that had a split it in.
Anyway, I really appreciate your replies.
Diolch (Thanks),

A malfunctioning Air Mass Meter doesn't usually cause excess black smoke, although there is always a first time for everything!
A Diesel specialist (Preferebly Bosch) should have this problem diagnosed pretty quickly.
Please report back your 'findings'

........"but it just revved up to about 4K RPM on it's own then came back down to 1K and up again to 4K then cut off again....."
That sounds like an engine management or fuel injection pump fault the more I read it....which are both expensive to rectify

One of the problems I have living where I do is that I'm limited, severly, to the people I can turn to for help. My local VW dealer is about 23 miles away and anyone else with the diagnostics kit would probably be double that distance and more. Anyway, they're going to check it over tomorrow morning so I'll get back and let you know what they say it is.
Thanks again,
Wayne
