hi, any one any idea best place to obtain the scanner required to read any fault codes stored in the ecu memory, car in question is a 97 v70 many thanks

There are loads of others,just type in something like: 'Volvo fault codes' on an internet search engine(google is the best).
On many modern cars you do not need a scanner, the fault codes can be displayed in the car.

Older Volvos have the complete diagnostic system onboard - you just press buttons and count flashing lights.
