Scrapping a car - Humpy
OK I'm sorry I'm too lazy to have enquired elsewhere, here is my first port of call....

I've finally fallen out with my beloved ZX Volcane, having done nothing for the last 4 months but languished half repaired in the garage, providing a convenient but unnecessary cat basket, I have decided it must go.

Will any breakers take it? Will they come and get it if I can't find other means of transport (not a runner)? How much is the going rate to scrap a car?

Thanks for any help,
Humpy

Humpy,

Depends on your locality but here in North Cambs they seem to want you to pay £20-£50 for anything you can drive in. They want £50 min to collect.

Amazingly they are quite fussy about the car type. Our local breakers are full of ZXs at the moment.

Roughly where are you?

Thanks for replying M.M. I'm in Leighton Buzzard, at a pinch I could borrow an Ifor Williams transporter and a 4WD to ship it. A5 french salvage, down the road, only take insurance write-offs, I'm not sure exactly where I'd take it. Suppose a quick search on www.yell.co.uk might sort me out. I just thought I might seek the wisdom of other BRs.

Plenty of people advertising in my local paper from free-£25 for collection (well, maybe!).

Check your local paper - you might find someone genuine.
Scrapping a car - Humpy
do you mean, genuine by way that they actually 'scrap' the car as opposed to relieving me of £25 then dumping it?

What is actually worng with the car ! Why are you letting a scrap dealer take it away , please tell me more about the problems and also where you are located . I presume you are in the UK ?

Mark, you may move this to the classifieds if you feel necessary, I'll try to not to make this like an ebay advert!!

I've had it for the last 3 years, taken it from 79000 to 128000. (1994 M-reg) Engine is still sweet as a nut (Castrol RS every 6000), but had a very funny vibration on acceleration over the last 4000. David W has posted a couple of times helping me with it. I've changed all the front suspension bushes and engine mounts, I resorted to changing the gearbox but have obviously got the electrics mixed up somewhere because it no longer turns or fires even though the electrics in the cabin work fine. I already have a work car (albeit a dreadful R-reg diesel vectra Di). The girlfriend is getting upset about the lack of garage space.

I love this car to bits but I think it's time to say goodbye. I just want to make the parting as painless as possible, sob sob....

Please mail me off board to save the space here , my email addy is........elaineromain@hotmail.com.... thanks .

There are those scrapping cars for free. Anyone who pays is a bit stupid. Be sure that the V5 document is sent back to the dvla and re-registered otherwise you may be liable to parking fines, speeding tickets etc.

Otherwise, you can sell it in the local paper for parts if it is running for at least £40. There are always owners who may need parts!

Scrapping a car - Humpy
That's fair comment Greg, hadn't thought about the V5. I'll look that out for sure.

Sorry welshy. In reply to your message. I'm just south of Milton Keynes in, well, I think it's in Bedfordhire!! I can't be bothered to sell it privately, also since it m=would take work to get it running!

In additon the handling is getting decidedly sloppy, needs shocks in front at least. When you compare the costs, I might as well get a fairly late xsara vts off of autotrader for less than £4000. Plus an extra 44bhp.

Hello Humpy

Just a suggestion, Why dont you consider selling the parts on ebay you will get more for parts than a whole car

One word answer - hassle! If you want to come and get it and break it and sell it, feel free!! n I really can't be bothered! I'm a vet, I'm on duty all weekend every other weekend, and two nights a week, time off is for enjoying which with the ZX happens no longer. Unfortunately.

The easiest way to get rid of a car if you can't be bothered selling the bits is just to advertise it as free.
Anyone running a similar (old) model gets a bargain car-full of spares for nothing, and you get your drive cleared.

Thanks cliff, hadn't thought about that. I'll probably do that. Cheers.

Phone your local council. Many councils now have a policy to scrap cars for FREE. (The reason is that it saves them money in not having to deal with dumped cars.)

Look in yellow pages and find the local independent Citroen Specialists. Not the Citroen Main Dealer.

They may be willing to take the car off you for spares or may even repair it. As it's not bent, you stand a better chance.

Good luck

When I lived near MK, there was a Cit specialist in Fenny Stratford. Can't remember the name of the road, but it was just off the roundabout just above the Tesco, MFI, commercial estate.
