I saw an article today that said that NCP was going to increase the size of car parking spaces as the number of car park accidents has increased with increasing car size. This is to be welcomed but will mean an decrease in the number of spaces!

In reality I think this is the tip of an iceberg as some of todays cars are also to big for many country lanes, numerous side streets and definately the school run. In this overcrowded country of ours the government need to think of ways to get people to downsize.

Yes we could do with downsizing the population by about 10 million, rather than still increasing it on a daily weekly monthly annual figure and still blaming 'greedy' buy to let landlords for the housing problem.

The problem with increasing parking space sizes is that it's pandering to those who can't drive for toffee but still insist on buying huge cars they are terrified of and can't possibly park to save theiur lives.

I can't be the opnly one whtoo often sits waiting interminably in sheer disbelief at the incompetence of so many people who presumably have driving licences whilst they attempt to drive Titanic forward into a space too small in one shunt, it beggars belief sometimes.

When we go to the supermarket together, not often, you find people who manage to take up the room of 4 people plus trolleys with just themselves and their one trolley whilst they make the world changing decision of 4 litres of semi skimmed or 6, my wife can often be heard muttering ''just imagine them behind a steering wheel'' before she unceremoniously moves their trolley for them.

I quite agree cars are too big now, quite why when there no more room in a new Focus than there was in a Mk3 Escort is a mystery, i prefer long and thin to wide if you'll pardon the expression.

It's not just bad parking but the limited space make cars much more likely to suffer damage by careless door opening by occupants of the adjacent car.

I like the double line setup used by some car parks, especially in shopping centres. There's one set of lines to show where to put the car, and another set of lines to show the total size of the space.

Although it should be obvious that you're supposed to park in the middle of a space, many people seem to think it's OK as long as you're in the box even if at an angle or hard over to one side. Two sets of lines seems to reduce this IME.

Some people will always be plain inconsiderate, but I think there's quite a few who just need better guidance.

yes preferably to the exit.

I suspect parking charges will increase to make up for not as many cars able to park, but it would be good to see this in supermarkets as well..

Yes, the new Micra, once a manageable small car, will be 3999mm x 1742mm wide when it is released next year.

I recently drove a hired Mondeo down a country road I have used for decades. It felt quite huge so I looked up its size. The dimensions ae more than a Mk IV Zephyr 6 I drove for three years but it felt nothing as spacious inside. The Zephyr was nicknamed an 'Aircraft Carrier' and a 'Dagenham Dustbin' by much of the press but was a much better car than many were led to believe!

The Mk IV Zephyr/Zodiac seemed huge at the time, albeit with that ugly stubby boot. I believe the new Mondeo is also larger than most (if not all) incarnations of the Granada.

The Rover 820 Si I once had the misfortune to have as a company car in the early 90's also felt huge, to the extent that a mate of mine referred to it as an "ocean going liner".

Walking through Sainsburys car park just yesterday, I was looking at a recent Corsa, thinking it must be similar in size to a 90's Astra. Same goes for new Fiesta vs. Mk III/IV Escort.

Unfortunately people are also increasingly getting wider and heavier, as gordonbennet alludes to, and feel they must have an SUV to be comfy.

Most construction site car parks(if they have one) require the vehicle to reversed into the space provided. This is also the case in all concrete plants, and other industrial units. It prevents the situation, especially after dark, of vehicles reversing into the traffic flow, thereby saving considerable time and frustration. Why not make it compulsory in all car parks. That would sort out the wheat from the chaff. You could have endless fun in your local supermarket car park watching the antics of those who have a license but can't really control a vehicle at low speed. Time to buy a video camera!!

Cheers Concrete

No wonder we have seen the meteoric rise in popularity of Aldi the German discounter. Their spaces are generous by modern day standards and the trolleys are well maintained so little wheel wobble.
Lidle are ok too !

Depends on their stores, the ones by me are as tight as anywhere.

The supermarket is the one place where I drive into the space. So that I can wheel the trolley up to the boot.

Your method is fine for most carparks, but I'd rather not have lots of people squeezing their trolleys down the side of my car, thank you.

I hope that when self driving cars become a major force, fewer people will own cars (we'll just summons them when we need them).

Hopefully many of our streets will become much less congested with parked cars, and we'll speed traffic flow.

As there are a lot of people who do not like public transport,(who normally use it) I suspect there will be more cars around because you do not need a licence and are in your own space in the warm.

I for one do not like the idea of self driving cars, ok in comic books but in reality they do not have any common sense, also, as you do not need to drive them, I think more will be used on the road and cause worse congestion than we already have

It would be good if they could park themselves though - a bit like valet parking in the USA but without all the tipping etc.

I'm not sure I like the idea of self-driving cars. I'd come out of the house expecting it to take me somewhere, and it would be waiting in the queue at the hydrogen station for a fill-up (hopefully it would bring me back a cake).

I don't like the sound of a company like Uber controlling access to driverless cars either - with prices tripling during high-demand.
