My sons car, good in almost all respects for his needs but wheels / tyres are useless. He was lucky that he was flagged down by a concerned motorist the other night who thought his wheel was falling of. The local tyre specialist says POTHOLES were the cause of wall failure that were spotted by the concerned motorist. A further issue with the wheels is 'leaking' tyres, most likely to be the result of corrosion breaking down the many layers of laquer used to 'protect' diamond cut finishes and attached finishing rims.

The car is a top spec. model with a 225/40 R18 combination that he'd like to replace with a more conventional size, say 205/55 R16 found on my 55 plate Zetec or something in between.

Replacement wheels will preferably be a FORD set, but are aftermarket alternatives (new) an option worth considering.

Is this possible, without affecting rolling diameter / speedo and ABS functions etc.

We are aware that the Insurance will need to be advised of any such changes as well as a possible change to 'all weather' / Winter tyres.

Many thanks.

Some higher-spec cars have larger brake calipers, meaning they can't take smaller wheels - for example BMW, if they've got the 'Msport brake pack' fitted, it's a minimum of 18" wheels. For normal cars, it's 16".

As to buying new wheels, he'll find that genuine Ford wheels are probably horribly expensive. However, ebay (or other such sites) are great for picking up cheap wheels, and even for selling the old wheels. The bonus for him is that big wheels are 'in' and look good, so sell really well. Smaller wheels not so popular, so can be bought cheaply.

As an example, I bought a 320iSE quite a few years ago that someone had then put silly big 18" Msport wheels on, as opposed to the original 16" rims. I bought a set of 16s off ebay, got new Pirelli tyres fitted, then put them on the car. Total cost about £300. The 18s, with about 3mm tread depth, I then sold for £400 !

So buying used wheels and putting high-quality tyres on will probably be the best bet, if feasible.

Here is a calculator for rolling circumference, and the difference. www.wheelcalc.com/

For the change you've suggested, the difference for speedo, etc will be 0.77%, an ideal choice.

All Mondeo brakes are the same ,of this era,so no problem there.I would suggest 205/55 16.Very popular size for a Mondeo and loads of genuine Ford wheels available s/hand.Stick with original Ford wheels and you can use your existing bolts.I have the same problem on my Mondeo, tyres continually running flat through corrosion on the rim.

Many thanks both, EBAY looks promising at the moment and currently offers a FOCUS set of wheels. Seems there'll be minimum change to the offset etc. and negligible change to the speedo (reading slightly higher). Had to move, he's just bust another tyre on a pothole - there's millions of them down here. Looking into claiming against the council but unless I can prove beyond all reasonable doubt what specific pot hole caused the damage looks like it'll be a non starter.

Try these sites: www.fixmystreet.com/ and www.potholes.co.uk/

If the pothole causing the damage has been previously reported and not fixed within a reasonable time, then you may have a good case for a claim.

It helps others if you also reprt potholes!

The "driver's manual" will tell you which size tyres are legal.ie. homologated for that specification of car by Ford.
