MK1 Focus 2.0 Petrol versus MK5 Golf 2.0 diesel - K21000

I am looking to buy a MK5 Golf 2.0 GT (pre DPF) to replace my Focus 2.0 Zetec petrol. I do 12k milage a year and want the holy grail of more torque, power and economy. I am amazed at the torque difference on paper between the two (131 v 236 lb-ft), but the Golf is alot heavier (16%). Fuel economy and road tax are hugely better too. I have very briefly driven the Golf and was really impressed. I don't use motorways, but accasional A road higher speed cruising, mostly B roads. I am worried about high repair costs for diesels, but the other benefits are tempting. I will be looking for a fully serviced car for 4.5-5k hopefully. Is the Golf a good choice, or are there better cars for the money?

That generation of Golf has, to be blunt, a horrendous reputation for problems. The accountants seemed to over-rule the engineers all the way through.
