2009 Mondeo TDCI 100k - Mondeo MK4 TDCI Whining Sound at Low Speeds - mr jinks

Hello

I have a Mondeo which is making a whining/whirring sound, not just under acceleration (ie makes the same sound when foot taken off the accelerator), and is more pronounced at low speeds (10-35mph especially) - the sound resembles the noise some cars make when reversing at more than walking pace. It seems to be more a bit noticeable after 15 minutes into a journey. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Wheel bearings?

Does the pitch of the sound increase (i.e. get higher) as the engine revs rise?

Or is it only related to road speed?

If you're at 30mph, does the noise die away if you push the clutch in and take your foot off the throttle, or does it stay the same?

I have 2008 mondy. Does it do it if you coast with engine of? If it's a bearing issue it will still do it but if it's gears or similar it won't. I had a whine which was due to power steering. I changed the fluid reservoir and gave it v fresh fluid and it sounds better now. Coasting will also mean power steering pump isn't active so that might give you a clue if it doesn't whine with engine off.
