Don't waste your time .If the fuel pump has broken up,there will be contamination of the fuel system ,including the injectors. The complete fuel system will need to be flushed, including the tank.

These old mechanical Bosch pumps go on for hundreds of thousands of miles . However the rubber seals can leak due hardening with age and as a result of less lubricity with modern low sulphur diesel fuel. Breakers are full of old XUD powered 406's and their cousins, 306, Xantia, ZX etc, so getting a new pump shouldn't be too hard. To fit it youself you would need a Haynes manual or the instructions are here

but you would need special tools and so on. A common failure on these pumps is that the front seal goes, they are only about £8 and a good diesel specialist could do it in situ.

best of luck.

I'm suspecting you put unleaded in it by mistake. I've seen Halley's Comet more times than Ive seen Bosch diesel fuel injection pump terminal failures.

In that case it's possible that you picked up fuel that's got water in it, but if you had I doubt you'll be the only one with a problem. Others will have too. Diesel is an oil, and your engine will still run on it as long as it will vaporise on the hot compressed air. I'd be amazed if there was anything wrong with your fuel pump. Check for air leaks back to the tank and the fuel filter.

Halleys comet, I Like it! My thoughts exactly, Ve's go on for ever. Bryn have you tried changing the filter, if its clogged you end up with less go than a geritric eunoch. Pressure regulation on the Bosch VE pump is done by a good old fashioned valve with a spring and plunger.

I thought the title post was 406 hdi.So it is a common rail system, not a ve pump?

Oh yeah, I missed that. If it's an HDi then the in-tank fuel pump could've failed as they're quite common. Look inside the fuel filter and check for signs of metal filings. If the in-tank pump has failed then try thumping the underside of the fuel tank whilst someone cranks the engine. This usually starts the pump and the engine will start. Replace the pump though because it will happen again. This is only a temporary fix to get you going.
