Ford Focus / Nissan Almera Tino - Winter Tyres - Should I? - leef

Hi Backroomers!

Hope everyone is well, right I moved into the sticks last year from the city centre of Manchester, now live in Bacup which everyone tells me has very harsh winters!. Cars stuck on hills etc.... my neighbours all telling me, have you got "Winter tyres!" ready for this year.

Now, having NEVER had to use winter tyres, is it worth me splashing out £550 for 8 winter tyres (4 for the Focus) and 4 for the Nissan. Are they are drastic improvment over standard tyres?

My uncle used to rotate his "summer" and "winter" tyres every year and swore by them....

I do live on a pretty steep hill, so would love the backroomers as always great advice. Any brands to avoid big time? any recomendations.

Cheers as always

Lee

In, short, YES. Get winter tyres. They make a huge difference on ungritted/rural/steep roads.

HJ highly recommends Vredestein Wintracs (possibly spelled differently). I've used Pirelli in the past, and have a set of 4 wheels and Pirelli winter tyres sitting in the garage, ready to go on (usually put them on at start of November).

As to how good they are ? Well, a RWD BMW suddenly becomes useable in ice/snowy weather. It's not a patch on our Terrano, but it's actually driveable, without constant abject terror. I live in North Wales, so similar hilly / frosty / icy / snowy conditions to yourself.

At least fit them to one of the cars.

Winter tyres aren't just about traction from the driving wheels - they're about lateral grip and braking which needs all 4 wheels.

Back in the 80s I used to do a lot of road rallying round your way (OS map 103) and also in N Wales and Yorkshire (competing out of Salford Uni as part of Northern Universities Motor Club).

If we knew there was likely to be snow and ice about I would equip my road rally prepared Avenger with M&S tyres. Used to get laughed at a lot at the start venues for running on "balloons", but a few top 10 finishes put paid to that.

Those tyres made a huge difference over standard road tyres. Ok, it probably doesn't get as snowey these days (we used to drive out to Awd Betts in 4ft snow just for the hell of it), but given where you live I'd have thought at least one set on one car would be essential to maintain mobility in the winter months.

Yes - but don't just turn up at your local tyre specialist asking for winter tyres. Research the tyres, consider buying a second set of wheels to mount them - some e-tailers will deliver wheel & tyre sets, I bought wheels on ebay from a breakers yard and my tyres from an overseas e-tailer who sent the tyres to me - they often recommend (and may deliver to) a local fitter.

Is it worth it - well, my tyres were purchsed in 2010 and will be deployed for 5th winter, possibly the last as they will be worn out by next spring. In the mean time my summer tyres have lasted longer, remember you will be running only one set of tyres at any time.

Did I benefit - well winter 2010 was very cold and snowy, I drove to the Alps, up to Zermatt and around snowy towns - never a difficult moment. Since then the weather has been kinder, still even above freezing the tyres behaved well. The various test results and driver comments will assist. I use Nokain WR-G2 (now replaced by newer models) although there are other good tyres in the market place too.

If you're going to get them do so asap whilst still reasonably cheap, i run a spare set of alloys just for winter and keep the unused tyre/wheel combo in my garage.

Best winter set i've had so far would be those Vred Wintracs mentioned above, amazing wet grip too.

Thanks for the messages everyone, I'm going to bite the bullit next month and get them fitted on both cars until around March time and then put the "summers" back on. Cheers for the brand update as well, I'll nail the V - wintracs, will cost me around £540 for both cars.

Cheers

Leef, before you splash out, investigate all season tyres with a view to running them all year....you could obviously swap back to your summer tyres in the season to get the rest of the wear out of them if you wanted.

The young ladies in the family have both run Vredestein Quatrac 2s and 3's as all year round tyres and they never have any trouble getting about, other brands obviously available, even my barmy daughter hasn't wrecked them and they kept her on the road too which is no mean feat given how she drives.

Genuine all seaons like these are snowflake/mountain embossed, so the right winter mix compounds involved, not just a chunkier tread which M&S alone without the snowflake signifies.

Obviously full winters are the best if conditions get really bad, but for the typical winter a good all season might well do the job you require all year.

Exactly GordonB. IMO All season tyres will be the only ones the OP will ever need unless he's doing some serious off roading in his 2wd Focus etc.

I have used Dunlop Grand Treks and Goodyear Wranglers on my old Nissan Xtrail (4x4) and am now running Toyo Open Country on my 4x4 Qashqai. There are plenty to choose from.. I have also heard good things about Pirelli Scorpions.

The Grand Treks and Wranglers let me drive the XT confidently past cars slithering around in the deep snow we had over the past few winters. Doing a 75m round trip commute with ease. Even when the official advice was 'stay home', which is great advice (except that work expected you in on time!).
