Seems it's only the maximum ammount that is changing - if you don't flout the law in a massive way then you won't get a massive fine.

You won't suddently find people being fined thousands for being a few MPH over the limit.

Seems it's to allow some serious fines to try and get people to behave responsibly.

yes, but they are still NOT tackling the problem of people driving too slowly, need to set and enforce minimum speed limits too

Very difficult to set a minimum speed though - some vehicles ie tractors would need to be made exempt. You also need to tak account of weather conditions and road surface. I don't think it would be workable.

I'm sure minimum limits will come in due course too, then commands to stay at regulated distances in the designated lane as decided by your satellite controlled/radar distance and steering control.

And you can all travel along in a regulated and monitored winding snake like good little drones in this fully concreted over once lush green isle, the chip inserted inside your head conveying every deviant independent thought to the banks of computers at Cheltenham for micro analysis.

It is a limit not a target! People are, rarely, prosecuted for going to slowly but it has to be pretty blatant - 40 on a clear motorway for example. Before imposing more fined they could do well to enforce the payment of existing fines the backlog of which is over £2 Billion!

It's not war on the motorist, it's war on bad drivers.

Surely that would be a good thing. The motorway would be less of a battleground bertween law-abiding drivers and those who see it as a race track. It's not as though driving on a busy motorway is fun anyway!

And it is not More taxation.

Taxation is compulsory; fines are a choice if you break the law.

Minimum speed limits are totally impractical because everyone would be breaking a minimum speed limit in a slow-moving tailback or in very severe weather e.g. thick freezing fog. Or maybe someone is driving slowly bececause their vehicle has developed a fault and they're limping to the next exit.

Some people drive at a speed that seems slow on motorways, but wouldn't say it's a real problem. The occasional dilapidated old ex Royal Mail Freight Rover van with bits of straw trapped in the rear doors, a spare wheel attached to a DIY bracket on the roof, and happily bumbling along the inside lane at 45 mph, adds variety to the rich tapestry of motorway scenery!

Amazing, £10k maximum for speeding.Speeding is obviously now the scourge of the country and must be stamped out at all costs. Either that or its just a way of bumping up all of the fines and discouraging anyone from disputing them.

Unfortunately the press seem to have swallowed a government press release and its examples hook, line and sinker.

Legislation sets a 'level' for ALL offences where Magistrates can sentence. Not just motoring but all and sundry.

The scales/maxima applicable to each level are still as they were set in 1991!! - successive govts look to have been sleeping on the job. Govt are now consulting on a general uprating.

The government must either be totally insane or totally broke - 10 grand for a speeding offence? It'll just bring on more of the cloned/false/illegible number plate incidence that's all- for laws to be respected thay have to be respectable, this ain't.

The government has been told time after time by qualified and respected driving organisations that speed per se isn't the problem, it's the wrong speed at the wrong place and time that is the problem, but do they listen? No, they just refer to the LimpDumbs for their roads policy and this measure stinks of Clegg and his minions.

I have always thought the fines we pay for speeding were pretty much irrelavent, and even at £10k max they still are. (Not that its a small amount) its just i value my licence much more. The reason i dont want to be caught, however daft or unrealistic a limit seems is that i dont want points, and i cant afford to lose my licence. And thats why after 29 years of driving they havent got me (yet). And if/when i do get caught i wont be much over the limit, and what ever the fine is wont seem so bad after all these years. I am sure to get anything like £10K you will need to be doing something very silly indeed
