Following on from the learners first car thread, can I ask for opinions on the pros and cons of a learner purchasing and insuring their own car as opposed to passing their test first and then doing it.

I've heard that doing the former, with a parent as a named driver can be a very good way of getting premiums down a bit at the same time as building a NCD but would welcome more feedback.
