VW Golf GTi Mk5 Manual - irregular idling speed - Grumpy old man

My 2007 VW Golf GT has developed a problem when idling. When the car is at a standstill and in neutral the idle speed willl suddenly drop from its normal idle speed, judder and then rev up to approx 1000rpm and back to normal again. It does not seem to matter whether the car is cold or at normal running temperature. does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Try cleaning the throttle body.
