VW Passat TD 2003 PD 130 Estate - Opinion about a quote - JonestHon

Our old Passat (190k) is getting rrr. older and need few bit and bobs to get her through the MOT and she need a full service (every 20k miles we do this). We have few garages near us and due to the car needing back ASAP (Our only car) I can't shop around too far and have no space to do any work like changing filters etc'. I was given a quote today (South Gloucestershire area) by my regular garage but I can't tell if I am beeing overcharged or not, labor in both garages I checked is around £50-55/hour, can you please tell if this is resonable?

1.MOT = £40

2. 5 Litre Magnatec engine oil =£20

3. Service kit (oil, air fuel, pollen filters)=£46.71

3.CV boot x 2 + grease = 2x 74.95= £149.9

4.Rear brake pads and disk=£141

5. 2 x Uniroyal Rain Expert 195/65/15 Tyres =£97.9

6.Wheel alingment=£23.5

7. ABS sensor right hand=55.95

Tot: £574 + 20% vat = £689

I can save you £8 as there is no VAT on an MOT!

A good way to check is to go on eurocarparts and plug in your reg number and look at the parts prices.

I'm no mechanic or even a DIYer, but the oil, service kit and tyres look good value.

The CV boots, rear discs and pads and ABS sensor look expensive however...

On the other hand, the "full service" without the extra items comes out around £240 which isn't far out.

Putting "Magnatec" oil into a VAG PD diesel engine which is serviced at about 20k mile intervals will cause camshaft and follower failure. The correct oil for this duty is a fully synthetic lubricant to VAG specification 507.00.

Allowing these vehicles to be worked on by ill-informed or non motivated parties spells disaster and will grossly inflate overall running costs.

Find a good Independent who specialises in these vehicles.

659.

I read that the car has done almost 200,000 miles. Plenty of time for camshaft failures using cheap oil and and extended intervals.

Makes you wonder if VAG have an angle to extract cash during service time, like they do over the cambelt change interval.

My error it's not Magnatec but 5 litre of Castrol Edge 5w-30 fully synth (I was looking at the bouchure attached and not the actual quote).

The prices all include labour, why the hell replacing the CV boots cost so much? I must admit tho that while driving this car over 100k ourself it never needed CV boots or new disks at the back, which is good. When we got her six years ago she was on long intervals but we always change oil every 10k and get her fully serviced every 20k. Intresting you mention the cam belt, my book show that we changed it at 120k so she is due for another on very soon, my garage is a VW specialist and they want £299 for the job and parts (kit and water pump), is this sound reasonable?

If the prices include the labour for each bit then I don't think that it is bad at all. Some jobs are more labour intensive than others - ie the CV boots. You are having a lot of work done in one go, that's why it is a big bill.

The cambelt and water pump change sounds about right. Last year I paid £320 in the South East at a good VAG independent and they fitted an Audi water pump which they reckoned is a bit better than the VW unit. All your other quotes look either good (the servicing kits and oil) or reasonable for the brakes and CVs.

Thank you Simon,

I think I will get ahead and book myself in, I think you are right as it is multiple consumable change so I should expect a large bill.

The car came with full service history from a small engineering firm and when I look at this carefully I see that she is still on the original Clutch and exhaust while the back pads and disk were nver changed either (but were inspected every service).

It is either a testimony to how durable the components on these cars are or the fact that she was serviced regulary all these years.

There aren't any CV boots at the back, it's front wheel drive.

Good advice, these cars are durable as long as you always use 506 or 507 spec oil. These engines will take either but later DPF equiped cars needed the 507 spec.

Agree with 72 dudes, Eurocarparts also regularly offer 25% discount codes, the filter kit looks a little costly.

Try also GSF they supply Mann filters, which stranglely are cheaper if buy via their Ebay shop.

Yes but if the price also includes the labour associated with fitting each part, then the filter kit is not expensive at all.
